What to do when someone dies

We understand that it can be a difficult time when someone close to you dies. We're here to support you when dealing with their Chase finances. There are some initial steps we recommend taking before notifying us of a death. We'll guide you through these steps below.

Before you notify us

Before getting in touch with Chase, please make sure you have the following details to hand. It's okay if you don't know all of it, just gather what information you can and we'll do our best to help.

  • The full name, date of birth and address of the person who has died
  • Their Chase account number
  • The mobile phone number associated with their account
  • The email address associated with their account
  • Your name, address, daytime contact number and email address
  • Your relationship to the person who has died
  • The details of the executor

Documents you'll need

There are also some documents that we'll need to see during this process. Please try to have them ready before you contact us.

Proof of your identity

Once you've told us who you are and your relationship to the deceased, we'll ask you to verify your identity with one of the following documents.

  • A valid UK or international passport
  • A valid UK or international driving license
  • A UK armed forces card

A death certificate

This means any copy of the death certificate provided to you by a register office. If you haven't registered the death yet, you can do so at your local register office (Opens in new window)

We can also accept an interim death certificate, a coroner's certificate of the fact of death, or a death certificate issued outside the UK. Certificates issued outside the UK must first be translated to English.

A grant of representation

This means either a grant of probate, letters of administration, or a certificate of confirmation, if you have one.

Contacting Chase

As soon as you're ready, you can contact Chase to inform us of your bereavement. We won't pressure you, and we encourage you to do this in your own time, once you've taken care of the steps we've already covered.

We'll guide you through every step of the process and try to make it as straightforward as possible.

There are multiple ways to notify us of a death once you're ready to do so.
